A Minute With: Hungarian violinist Kelemen - proud of Roma roots
By Michael Roddy LONDON (Reuters) - Hungarian violinist Barnabas Kelemen has studied with the late virtuoso Isaac Stern and won Gramophone magazine's award for best chamber music CD of 2013, but what he is really proud of is his Roma heritage. Kelemen, who was in London this week to accept the prestigious Gramophone award for his disc of Bartok violin sonatas and to appear with his wife Katalin Kokas in the Kelemen Quartet at Wigmore Hall on Sunday, credits his late Roma violinist grandfather as an inspirational figure in his life. ...

U2 album stumbles in Billboard chart after free iTunes debut

Apple CEO Tim Cook stands with Irish rock band U2 as he speaks during an Apple event announcing the iPhone 6 and the Apple Watch at the Flint Center in CupertinoBy Piya Sinha-Roy LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - U2's controversial free album on Apple's iTunes had a less than stellar performance once released for commercial sale, coming in at No. 9 in its first week on the Billboard 200 album chart on Wednesday. Country group Florida Georgia Line far outperformed the Irish rockers by selling 197,000 copies of "Anything Goes" in its first week for the top spot on the chart, compared with U2's 28,000 units sold, according to sales figures compiled by Nielsen SoundScan. "Songs of Innocence," the 13th studio album from U2, became the largest album release in history after being made available for free in September on Apple Inc's iTunes online store to half a billion iTunes users. Billboard does not count sales of albums priced under $3.49 for its weekly album chart listings.

Trip Tips: New York City for music lovers

File photo of a man playing an erhu, a traditional Chinese instrument, in the subway following the 14th Annual Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade in New YorkNew York is a center for blues, jazz, folk, rock, hip-hop, punk, classical and other musical styles played in its world-class concert halls, dive bars, parks and museums. The city that never sleeps moves to the beat of many different drummers, from the timpani player at the New York Philharmonic to the street performer skillfully pounding the bottom of an overturned plastic bucket. Many of New York City's 8.4 million residents were born in another country, which means the typical subway rider has likely commuted to the sounds of an Andean harp, a West African kora, a Chinese erhu or a Caribbean steel drum being played at rush hour as part of the Music Under New York program (http://web.mta.info/mta/aft/muny/). Fans of the late American composer Leonard Bernstein swear certain subway trains sound the first few notes of his "West Side Story" hit "Somewhere" when they pull out of the station.
